Plumbing Safety in San Diego

Our Safety Culture—Think. Plan. Perform!

Plumbing is not an easy job. No matter how big or small a plumbing issue is, there are always certain risks involved especially when working with high-powered equipment and tools. Because we take safety seriously not just for our customers’ sakes but for our employees as well, we have set-up an in-house Safety Program to prevent any injuries, danger, or harm that may potentially arise while our San Diego plumbers are on the job. By keeping our working environment and our employees safe, we are also able to provide faster and more efficient service.

Think: HPS Safety Committee

In 2011, HPS Plumbing Services formed a Safety Committee in charge of conceptualizing new procedures and practices to promote safety. The goal of the committee is to be able to implement a “Safety First Environment” for each of our employees by enhancing the company’s existing Safety program and find creative ways to encourage the participation of all. The nine-member committee convened monthly to review any incidents of occupational hazards including near-misses and open claims while also figuring out the appropriate corrective actions and preventative measures to initiate positive changes in the company’s safety culture.

By January 2012, HPS Plumbing Services’ Safety Committed was able to roll out a new Safety Incentive Program to encourage employees to keep a Safety First mindset whenever they are on the job. Every second Friday of each quarter, the San Diego plumbing company holds a Safety BBQ where employees can win several prizes including a chance to win one of three cash prize amounts and an incentive of $4,000 that is equally divided between all full-time field employees that have met the safety standards within the past 12 months. This means a consistent year of no accidents or injuries, no worker’s comp claims, and no safety warnings.

Additionally, the Safety Committee also started the Continuous Safety Improvement (CSI) meetings that are held twice a year with the purpose of getting direct input from employees on the different risks and concerns that they encounter while on the job.

These meetings are open to the following:

  • All project managers
  • Foremen
  • Superintendents
  • Any other employees who would like to participate

Each CSI is held in a local diner which in effect are like company-sponsored dinner conversations or an open forum for employees who may have any questions or concerns regarding safety and OSHA compliance.

Plan: HPS Safety Training

As per OSHA regulations, all new hires at HPS Plumbing Services are mandated to go through our Safety Orientation prior to being assigned any on-site job.

Our Safety Supervisor makes sure that all employees are fully trained for the task that they are asked to perform as well as in:

  • IIP
  • Safety manual
  • Heat illness prevention plan
  • GHS/Hazcom

In 2014, each employee at HPS Plumbing Services also started using a Safety Card Program wherein all training and certificates of the employees are tracked down on the card. Our customers can then scan the employee card using the QR code to see the information they need about our San Diego plumbers. This program not only helps give our customers the peace of mind, it also keeps our records in order and ensures that each employee is updated on all necessary training.

Perform: Safety Support

In our collective effort to achieve better risk control, ensure OSHA compliance, and encourage open communication from each employee on all our projects, our Safety Supervisor makes it a point to conduct regular safety site inspections in addition to the standard visits by our project managers. During these site checks, our Supervisor takes note of all necessary items such the daily Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) that is performed by the superintendent or foreman of the project and reviewed by all members of the crew each morning prior to commencing work. We also hold a weekly Tailgate Meeting on every job site led by the foreman or field supervisor of the project to review our IIPP.

On October 2016, HPS Plumbing Services has recently revamped our Safety Manual and IIPP and plan to do this on annual basis to stay up to date with any changing codes and regulations in the plumbing industry.
